Abstract

1398963 Xerographic development; automatic control of concentration HOECHST AG 22 Sept 1972 [25 Sept 1971] 43982/72 Headings G2H and G3R Replenishment of toner in an electrostatic development apparatus forming part of an electrophotographic apparatus is controlled by an electrical measurement of voltage across or current through a resistor, representative of the amount of toner transferred to an electrostatic latent image undergoing development. Preferably the development apparatus is electrically insulated, and receives a charge from circulating carrier particles equal and opposite to that passed by toner particles to a photo-conductive surface 2 undergoing development. Alternatively an insulated electrically conductive plate may sample a proportion of used toner cascading from the photo-conductive surface. In either case the measurements control a toner replenishment apparatus, suitably comprising a hopper 15 and grooved roller 17. Two toner sources may be arranged to supply toner in parallel, one responding to a count of the number of copies produced and the other making up a residual requirement.
