Abstract

1390805 Electro-photographic apparatus INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 20 July 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 33913/72 Heading G2H In an electro-photographic apparatus, in which a charged photo-conductive surface on a drum 10 is imaged by a cathode ray tube 15, the developer mix of magnetic carrier and toner particles is applied in a cascading stream from a horizontally mounted rotatable cement-mixer like drum 18. The movement of the mix in an upward direction in the drum is aided by permanent or electric magnets 30 located outside the drum. These magnets may be so arranged and, if electric; operated such that differing predetermined widths of the drum may be supplied with developer mix and thus effect an economy of mix when narrow sheet copies are to be produced. A detector 29 adjacent the cascading stream determines the quantity of toner and, through control means 25, automatically actuates a toner replenishment device 22. A row of individually operable electromagnets may also be placed across the top of the path of the cascading stream to thereby add further control to the developing process.
