Abstract

1,076,595. Electro-photographic processes. ADDRESSOGRAPH-MULTIGRAPH CORPORATION. Sept. 9, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 36961/64. Heading G2H. In a process for developing an electrostatic image, toner particles are repelled from discharged areas by a positive corona discharge directed at the rear of an image bearing element, while developer is applied to the front of the element. As shown, a sheet 12 of paper having a photo-conductive insulating layer bearing a charge image on its underside is fed from a sensitizing and exposing section of a copying apparatus to a developing section. Positively charged toner particles are carried on a magnetic brush, created, around a rotating drum 44, by a permanent magnet 46. The developer mix is fed to the drum by members 40 and 42 and removed from it by member 48. A wire 28 is mounted between insulators 82 on a guide member 52, and is maintained at a positive potential of 4-6, 000 volts. Drum 44 is made of conductive material and is at ground potential. The corona discharge produces a microamp current from the drum to ground. A permanent magnet 98 removes iron particles which have been carried on to the back of sheet 12. The sheet is fed out of the developing section by nap surfaced rollers 54 and 56. When used in reversal printing, the corona discharge enables the toner to be evenly applied to the non-image areas and prevents the iron particles from being retained on the image areas.
