Abstract

976,542. Curtains; suspending curtains. SMITH'S DELIVERY VEHICLES Ltd., and I. H. ADLER. April 29, 1963 [May 7, 1962], No. 17446/62. Headings A4B and A4S. [Also in Division B7] A thermally insulating curtain for minimizing the exchange of heat when the door of a heated or refrigerated compartment is opened comprises flattened, overlapping, seamless tubes 1 of polyethylene which are sealed at both ends and partially inflated, the upper ends being trapped between wooden battens 2 and the lower ends 4 being heat welded and weighted by sand 5 which is preferably enclosed in a flat bag and retained by a heat seal 5b. Screws 3 pass through the overlapped upper ends of the tubes and before final screwing a blast of air or other gas is passed into each tube. In modifications the weighting member consists of a bar or part of a clamping closure member. As shown in Fig. 4 the curtain falls flush with a down-turned flange 7 defining the door opening and as shown in Fig. 2 the curtain engages a sealing ridge 9 on the door opening of a refrigerated vehicle body and the door has a transverse rib 12 which lifts the curtain clear of the ridge as the door is closed. The plastic tubes are preferably transparent or translucent.
