Abstract
A screen made of plastics film or mesh restricts cold air escaping from a refrigerator or freezer when the door is opened. It may be manually moved up or down or could be automatically driven by a low voltage electric motor. It could be triggered to work by a door mounted switch. The screen rolls onto a bottom-mounted spring roller. The screen may drop down to allow circulation when the door is shut and may return upwardly as soon as the door opens thereby retaining cold air in the refrigerator or freezer.
Description
ENERGY SAVING SCREEN FOR FRIDGES OR FREEZERS
My invention is described as a device to prevent cold air escaping from a fridge when the door is opened.
When the door is opened, cold air sinks out of the lower portion and is replaced above with warm air.
My device would consist of a sheet of plastic film or mesh that would be installed on the inside of a fridge, held by light tracks either side and roll onto a roller at the bottom. (Like an inverted window blind) using a light spring loaded mechanism.
The top of the film or mesh would have a light plastic bar that could be used to grip it so as to move it up or down. The side runners could have small notches or detents to stop the bar at any given point. It could also be spring loaded to return to top position when door is closed. It alternatively could be operated electronically by a small motor to move screen up or down.
It could cover the full depth of fridge or just bottom 3h's.
The main principal is to retain cold air while looking or removeing items.
The film could be clear plastic or fine mesh.
It could be built into existing designs or added as an aftermarket product.
Obviously depending on the ambeint temperature outside the fridge will dictate the amount of energy saved + the frequency of the door being opened.
Also cold air released into a heated room requires more energy to bring upto room temperature.
If cold air circulation was a concern, mechanics could be reversed so as its in rolled up mode when door is shut and comes up when door is opened.
Claims (4)
1) A device to retain cold air when fridge or freezer door is opened, the device being a plastic film or mesh screen that can be moved up or down to expose fridge shelves for access and retracts onto sprung roller.
2) A device to retain cold air that could be held by guides or runners.
3) A screen as claim I and 2 that could be moved up and down with an electric motor.
4) A screen according to 3 that could operate automatcally up or down by a remote switch on door.
