Abstract

975,962. Aerials. CSF-COMPAGNIE GENEBALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Dec. 11, 1961 [Dec. 15, 1960], No. 44298/61. Heading H4A. In an aircraft an aerial radome (not shown) is combined through a conical coupling member 1 with a conical anemometer tube 5 and if the latter is made wholly or in part of dielectric material it tends to act as a directive secondary radiator. This disadvantage is overcome according to the invention by partially coating or covering the dielectric portion of the anemometer tube with a metallic layer. The extent of this layer is empirical and when as in the embodiment shown the whole tube is formed of dielectric material, the metallic layer may extend between the sections 3 and 4. The effect of this on the transmission factor and on the refraction error of a paraboloid aerial fed from a four channel " monopulse " source is illustrated (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown). In a further embodiment (Fig. 4, not shown), which comprises a tube having a metallic and a dielectric portion, a metallic coating is applied to a part of the dielectric portion to give two metallic parts separated by a dielectric part. The radome is made from laminated polyester glass. The metallic coating for the anemometer tube may be a brushed on layer of colloidal silver or it may simply be a metallic sleeve.
