Abstract

1,267,802. Aerials. POST OFFICE. 24 March, 1969 [25 March, 1968], No. 14357/68. Heading H4A. A dielectric lens assembly comprises a waveguide coupling portion consisting of a cylindrical part 1 with a tapered part extending from one end, and a lens portion 3 extending from the other end of said cylindrical part. The lens portion has a face which is outwardly dome-shaped, and it has an axial thickness of not less than 2d<SP>2</SP>/# e , where d = diameter of the cylindrical part 1 and # e = wavelength in the dielectric material of the lens portion 3 at the midband operating frequency. As described, the lens assembly is made of polythene, the coupling portion is fed by a circular waveguide 2 (the tapered part providing matching), and the front face 4 of the lens portion 3 is specially contoured to control the distribution of radiation over an associated aerial reflector, to reduce side-lobes. A chamfer 5 is provided to minimize spill-over, and a circular disc or flange may be fitted over the waveguide behind the lens portion to reduce radiation caused by internal reflection at the face 4. Reduction of internal reflection may also be obtained by drilling quarter wavelength deep holes over the face 4. The dimensions shown in Fig. 1 relate to an assembly for use at a nominal frequency of 4 GHz. In another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) a quarter wavelength thickness of a suitable dielectric material is provided over the front face of the lens portion, to reduce internal reflection. In a third embodiment (Fig. 3, not shown) spill over is reduced by making the rear face of the lens portion of frusto-conical form, with an apex angle approximately equal to the angle subtended by the associated aerial reflector.
