Abstract

719,526. Aerials; radio direction-finding; aerial coupling arrangements. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1952 (Jan. 3; 1952], No. 31778/52. Classes 40 (5) and 40 (7) An aerial system which is based on the introduction of magnetic discontinuity into the transmission medium comprises an extensive conducting surface having disposed therein or mounted closely adjacent thereto a magnetic antenna element formed of an elongated body of high frequency, high permeability material, such as a dust-iron or ferrite bar, which is associated with signal coupling means. The system is. of particular application to aircraft where, as shown in section in Fig. 3, the magnetic element 12 may be retained by low-loss plastic 13 in a depression in the air-foil 11. Fig. 2 illutrates an embodiment arranged for direction finding in which three such elements 12 are arranged in the surface 11 as shown and coupled to a disc 15 of similar magnetic material disposed in a circular opening 14. The disc is rotatable to establish the direction of arrival of radio waves and carries a coil 16 from which connections extend'via slip rings, Fig. 4 (not shown). The elements carry shaped pole pieces 20 which are adjustable to reduce sextantal error, and the angular position of the elements may also be adjusted to compensate for quadrantal error. Fig. 1 (not shown) illustrates an embodiment comprising a single magnetic element carrying a coil and located in a slot in a conductive sheet. Aerials according to the invention are suitable for operation at any frequency including low frequencies; the direction finder illustrated in Fig. 2, when constructed with elements 14 inches long, operates in the range 100- 1750 kc.
