Abstract

599,600. Aerials. LAWSON, J. D. Oct. 11, 1945, No. 26591. [Class 40 (v)] An ultra-high-frequency wireless aerial system for producing an asymmetric polar diagram (e.g. as described in Specification 599,572) comprises a mirror 10 which is divided by a conductive plate 11, each portion of the mirror being coupled to a common receiver or transmitter, over separate paths in which are situated means for imposing a phase displacement on the energy passing to, or from, one portion with respect to the energy passing to or from the other portion. The aerial is coupled to the receiver or transmitter by the waveguide 12 having a flared aperture and divided over a portion of its length by plate 14 lying in the same plane as the plate 11. A piece 15 of dielectric material, preferably a plastic of the polystyrene group, is inserted into one of the divided portions of the guide, whereby the selective phase displacement is introduced. The invention is applicable to an airborne radar system which provides a survey of the terrain over which the aircraft is flying and which is adapted also to search in a horizontal plane for. other aircraft and radar beacons. In such a radar system, the aerial is so adapted that the dielectric body may be wholly or partly removed when the radar is performing the latter function so that the requisite narrow beam may be obtained.
