Abstract

590,469. Radiolocation. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. May 11, 1944, No. 9034. Convention date, Nov. 28, 1942. [Class 40 (v)] In a pulse radar system in which the frequency of the transmitter and the receiver is cyclically varied over a wide band to minimise detection and/or jamming by the enemy, the transmitter is continuously matched to its aerial by including an adjustable network which is varied in accordance with the variation of the transmitting frequency. In one embodiment, Fig. 2, the variable condenser 51 in the tuned anode circuit of the transmitter oscillator and the variable condenser 54 in the receiver tuned circuit are continuously varied by the motor 25 which may be controlled by the rheostat 58 and the radiation characteristic of the transmitting aerial 12 is maintained constant by simultaneously varying the condenser 61 in the impedance adjusting network 60. The frequency variation may be made more complex by replacing each variable condenser by two variable condensers in parallel which are driven simultaneously at different rates over different frequency ranges, Fig. 4 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tuning is varied by moving the cores of inductances in the tuned circuits and the impedance of the aerial matching network is varied by moving a shorting bar along a matching stub. The complex frequency variation is obtained by replacing the inductances by two inductances in parallel and by integrating the two driving movements to vary the shorting bar in a corresponding manner. Specifications 552,072, 590,480 and 14942/41, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, are referred to.
