Abstract

604,772. Radio direction-finding. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. Sept. 6, 1945, No. 22974. Convention date, July 7, 1944. [Class 40 (vii)] Relates to " two-path '' D.F. systems in which the directivity characteristic I of a first aerial system connected to one path has a minimum coincident with a maximum of the directivity characteristic II of the second aerial system connected to the other path, means being provided for comparing the outputs from the two paths to provide a D.F. indication. According to the invention, the first aerial system comprises two adjacent electromagnetic horns connected by branch waveguides differing in length by #/2 to a first waveguide, Fig. 3 (not shown), and the second aerial comprises a symmetrically positioned third horn connected to a second waveguide. The first and second waveguides are connected to separate receivers the outputs from which are applied to the X and Y plates of a cathoderay tube to produce a linear trace the inclination of which with respect to the vertical indicates the required bearing. When used in a pulse radar system, a fourth transmitting horn may be provided, the apertures of the four horns being in a common plane, Fig. 2 (not shown), or alternatively one of the three receiving horns may be employed also for transmission by using a T.R. switch.
