Abstract

847,252. Radio navigation. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. Feb. 28, 1957 [March 6, 1956], No. 6808/57. Drawings to Specification. Class 40(7). In an aircraft landing system, of the type described in Specification 847,253, the runway is indicated by longitudinal and transverse high frequency radio scanning beams which respectively provide azimuth and elevation readings of the craft position at the craft receiver. Additionally, a third beam is provided which gives the instantaneous range of the craft from the touch-down point. The third beam is radiated from the transmitter antenna, positioned at one side of the runway, opposite the touch-down point. It is fan-shaped, the plane of the lobe being vertical, and is positioned in azimuth in dependence upon its frequency, which is varied periodically. The transmitter includes a backwardwave oscillator electronically tuned by a voltage wave having a shape corresponding to the required beam movement. A signal representative of the height of the craft above the runway is obtained, at the craft by first deriving a signal representative of the height of the required flight path above the runway at the measured range and then adding a further signal corresponding to the deviation of the craft from the flight path in elevation.
