Abstract

A coating and sealing composition comprises a solution containing 10 to 30% coal, 1 to 15% butadiene acrylonitrile rubber, 25 to 65% of a high boiling aromatic oil of distillation range 230-530 DEG C. and from 10 to 44% coal-tar pitch. Heavy creosote oil is the preferred oil. The coal is preferably soft or bituminous coal, pulverized so that 90% passes through a 40 U.S. mesh screen. The heavy creosote oil may be added to the coal-tar pitch, heated to 149 DEG C., the coal added, the temperature raised to 600 DEG F. to dissolve the coal, cooled to 300 DEG F. and the rubber added. Fillers e.g., ball clay, china clay, zinc oxide, lead chromate, barium sulphate, asbestos, iron oxide and talc may also be present.ALSO:Metal, wood or concrete for conveying sewage is coated with a composition comprising a solution containing 10-30% coal, 1-15% butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, 25-65% high boiling aromatic oil of distillation range 230-530 DEG C. and from 10-44% coal-tar pitch. The coating may be applied cold or as a hot-melt composition or as a composition which includes solvents which evaporate off. The coating with or without fillers may be applied to a steel I-beam encapsulated in concrete (Example I) to galvanized sheet metal (Example V) and as a protective coating to concrete used for sewerage lines and tunnel liners (Example X).
