973,817. Indicating overload in cranes. STOTHERT & PITT Ltd. July 11, 1963 [July 11, 1962], No. 26653/62. Heading B8B. An overload indicator has a switch mounted on a member 14, Fig. 1, carried by a rod 12 which is moved by the tension in a hoisting cable and a switch operating member 24 which is moved up and down in Fig. 1 by a screw 26 and pinion 28 driven by the trolley drive mechanism of a boom crane or the luffing mechanism of a jib crane. The switch has three sets of contacts operated sequentially by a cam face 30 to illuminate a warning light when overload is approached, sound an audible signal when it is reached and finally contacts are opened to arrest movement of the trolley and/or hoisting of the load. Cam faces 38, 40 operate switches 42, 44, adjustably located on a rod 46, to stop the trolley at the inner and outer ends of its run. A switch 50 prevents the higher of two lifting speeds being used when a predetermined tension is exceeded. Fig. 3 shows an embodiment which works in a similar manner, the same ref. numerals being used with the suffix a.
