Abstract
386,655. Safety-devices for cranes. BABCOCK & WILCOX, Ltd. and FOX, R. S., Babcock House, Farringdon Street, London. July 14, 1931, Nos. 20167/31 and 10723/32. [Classes 78 (iv) and 78 (v).] A safe-load indicator or automatic stop device for cranes and like lifting devices comprises a member 1 attached to the luffing or hoisting rope, or to the tie rods of a jib crane, so as to move in accordance with the load, or the radius and the load, against the action of springs 6, Fig. 1, and an electric switch 10 carried by the member 1 operated by the engagement of an abutment member such as the roller 19 carried by the member 1 with a fixed cam or abutment 24. As shown, the member 19 is operatively connected with a bracket 15 carrying spring-pressed members 11 .. 14 which engage with switch contacts 20 .. 23. The member 1 comprises bolts 5 which slide in a block 4 pivoted at 8. In operation the member 11 lights a warning lamp in the driver's cabin, and the members 12, 13, 14 engage later with the contacts 21, 22, 23 and give a bell signal in the cabin and'break the circuits of the " overloading " and " luff-out " switches, or open a main circuit breaker. In a modification, Fig. 4, the hoisting or luffing rope passes round a sheave mounted on the member 1 which slides in a guide 5 pivoted at 7, and an abutment 11 carried by a switch lever 10 engages the inner surface of an eccentric semi-circular cam 13. In both forms the motion of the springs may be damped by a dashpot 16, Fig. 4. As applied to a crane with fixed jib (Figs. 7 and 8 not shown) the fixed cam is replaced by a simple abutment. As applied to an overhead travelling crane (Figs. 9 and 10 not shown), one end of the load rope is secured to the member 1 which carries a switch operated by engagement with a simple abutment. Specifications 25712/08, [Class 78, Lifting &c.], and 3658/09, [Class 78 (iv), Loading &c.], are referred to.
