A gyratory crusher, comprising a longitudinally-extending shaft 25 carrying a mantle 28 loosely encircled by a fixed crushing ring 15, includes a head 30 on the shaft at or towards its upper end, a hydraulically-suspended bearing 23 supporting the shaft through the head and permitting the axis of the shaft to gyrate and the shaft to yield in the event of excess pressure between the mantle and the crushing ring. The lower end of the shaft is constrained to move around a circle, and the shaft and mantle return to their normal working position after relief of the excess pressure, this position being determined by a fixed, non-adjustable abutment 36 against which a part, viz. the upper end of an annular piston 19 carrying the bearing, is yieldingly pressed by the hydraulic suspension so as to locate the mantle with respect to the crushing ring in an operative position, and the head is adjustable on the shaft to adjust the mantle towards and away from the crushing ring so that the operative position of the mantle with respect to the crushing ring is varied. The outer race 22 of the bearing is housed in the piston 19, movable in a cylinder 17 and normally maintained against the abutment 36 by hydraulic pressurefluid admitted through a passage 18. The screw-threaded upper end of the shaft 29 engages the threaded head 30 whose lower surface 31 engages the upper face 32 of a ring 33 supported on the outer race 22 by a distance piece 34, so that adjustment of the head locates the shaft and mantle in relation to the crushing ring. When uncrushable material becomes lodged between the mantle and the crushing ring, downward thrust is applied to the shaft, which is transmitted through the head 30 to the bearing and piston 19 and the liquid beneath the piston is forced out through the passage 18. Gyratory movement is applied to the lower end 35 of the shaft 25 by eccentric mechanism as described in Specification 973,045.
