Abstract
972,721. Lamp holders. L. D. MOSS. March 6, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10213/62. Heading H2E. In a lamp holder for a fluorescent lamp comprising an insulating casing 19 and an insert 20 having contact apertures 37 for receiving the lamp pins, the insert 20 is formed with a recessed end surface 41 into which the lamp cap is guided by casing edges 39 extending outwardly and downwardly from an arcuate lamp-rest edge 40 at the rear of the casing 19 to join casing side walls 22. The surface 41 is itself recessed at 43 to accommodate the lamp pins as the lamp cap is moved along edges 39 towards the boundary 36 of surface 41. The lamp holder is mounted for rocking movement at each end of a fluorescent light fitting comprising a channel having a flat base 2 and bulbous side walls 3, 4 by means of an attached spring 16 which hooks into the holder and urges it against a casing stop 17, the holder being held perpendicular to the channel base 2 when the lamp is removed by channel abutments 18. The spring hook 28 engages in a slotted plate 29 integral with casing 19 (shown without insert in Fig. 4) and also in a forwardly bent slotted part 34 of an earthing strip 32 held in position by an insert-securing screw 21 and having at the other end a tongue portion 32a which projects through insert 20 to engage the lamp cap. Leaf spring contacts 44, which are mounted between the back wall 25 of the casing and the insert 20, comprise tapered pin-engaging ends located behind elongated contact apertures 37, and lead terminals 45. Instead of mounting the holder directly on to the fitting channel, as above, it may be mounted by a steel sub-frame (Figs. 9-11, not shown) screwed into each end of the fitting channel. As before, a spring, fastened in this case to the sub-frame, is hooked into the holder, but in this case the holder is held upright by tongues projecting from the end of the subframe into recesses 61 and 66 in the lower end of holder casing 19. The section of the channel between the two end holders contains a choke, a condenser, and a starter switch, and is closed by a cover.
