Abstract

972,710. Gas-blast switches. ETABLISSEMENTS MERLIN & GERIN (S.A.). July 21, 1961, No. 26479/61. Heading H2B. In a gas-blast switch having tubular contacts 19, 23 and stress shields 18, 29 surrounding the contacts, one of the stress shields (29) is moved nearer to the other during the blast period to obtain optimum blast conditions. The switch shown is of the kind having a chamber 11 normally filled with compressed gas and provided with exhaust blast valves 25, 34. To open the switch, compressed air is supplied through a pipe 48 to cylinders 27, 35 to open the valves 25, 34. The valve 25 is connected to the contact 23 so that both contacts 23, 19 are initially moved upwards and bring the shield 29 nearer to the fixed shield 18. Valves operated by pistons 42, vent a cylinder 16 to atmosphere so that the pressure in the chamber 11 acting on a piston 17 subsequently moves the piston 17 so that it abuts and moves the contact 19 to open the switch. After a slight delay, valves 40, 47 shut off the gas supply to the cylinders 27, 35 and vent them to atmosphere so that the blast valves 25, 34 reclose and the contact 23 and shield 29 are moved back to the position shown. The contact 19 remains in its open position until the supply of gas to the pipe 48 is shut off to permit the valves operated by the pistons 42 to return to the position shown.
