The crimped filaments of a yarn are flattened, and then loaded along a longitudinal stripe at the points of cross-over with the crimps extending laterally therefrom to form a bulked yarn. In one embodiment (Fig. 2,) a yarn 10 is passed, if necessary to restore the crimp through a heated tube 14 and is then flattened between a roll 21 and a fabric shield 22 of for example spun glass and having a lining 23 of heat resistant, low friction material. A wire 24, heated electrically, is held against the shield by a weight 25 so that a longitudinal stripe of the yarn is heated and thus bonded. The yarn is then twisted, by a ring twister, so that the bonded stripe forms the core of the yarn. The hot wire may be replaced by a heated roll with one or two flanges to form, respectively, one or two bonded stripes. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, a cover shield 51 carries a nozzle 52 adapted to direct a jet of hot air, or bonding liquids, on to a stripe or stripes of the yarn. The hot flange(s) may be patterned, or the jets for the nozzle 52 varied to produce a novelty yarn with perhaps the yarn only being bonded at spaced points.
