Abstract

1459098 Fluid bulked yarns CRIMPIFIL Ltd 16 Jan 1975 [16 Jan 1974] 53413/73 Headings D1F and D1W A bulky yarn comprises intermingled continuous filaments in which at least 20% of the filaments (primary filament) are substantially straight and free form orunoidal, ring-like loops and the remainder (secondary filaments) are formed at randomly spaced longitudinal intervals with crunoidal, ring-like loops separated by relatively straight portions and are intermingled with each other and with the primary filaments so that the primary and secondary filaments break substantially simultaneously when an increasing tensile load is applied to the yarn. The primary and secondary filaments are intermingled in a treatment zone 24 by means of turbulent fluid flow, the primary filaments being fed to the zone 24 as one or more multifilament yarns at a rate 4 to 26% higher than that at which the intermingled filaments are withdrawn from the zone, the secondary filaments being fed as one or more yarns 2 at a rate at least 2.5% higher than that of the primary yarn 1 and up to 30% higher than the rate of withdrawal of the intermingled filaments at least one of the yarns being wetted and passed whilst still wet into the treatment zone 24. In the embodiment shown a 167 decitex 72 filament polyester yarn, a 78 decitex 20 filament nylon 66 yarn 2 and a 167 decitex 72 filament polyester yarn 3 are are fed at 336, 345 and 363 m/min respectively by portions 11, 12 and 13 of a stepped feed roll. Secondary yarn 3 is passed through water bath 30 then all three yarns are passed through a turbulent air flow chamber 24. The composite yarn 31 is withdrawn at 300 m/min and passed several times around rollers 35 so that it contacts 220‹C contact heater 33 and is relaxed and shrunk circa 10%. The yarn is withdrawn from the heater at 255 m/min and wound up on mandrel 34 at 270 m/min. The heater may be enclosed. Bulking of a second yarn using the same apparatus is described. Relaxation by contact heating of the yarn may be replaced by high pressure steaming at 130‹C of knitted garments. Polyolefin, viscose rayon and cellulose acetate filaments may replace the nylon or polyester.
