Abstract
982,351. Spinning and finishing yarns. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. Feb. 8, 1963, No. 5320/63. Headings D1F and D1W. A twisted or untwisted, natural or synthetic, continuous or staple fibre yarn, or a sliver or roving of staple fibres, is textured e.g. bulked, looped, crimped or "interrupted" (broken ends), and converted to slub yarn by forwarding one or more ends of yarn &c. by means of a high velocity e.g. 400-1000 yards per minute, stream of gas or vapour e.g. air or steam which may be heated and/or contain plasticizing agent (which separates the individual filaments) first through a jet and then against a foraminous surface from which the yarn is withdrawn through a second jet at a reduced velocity and subjected to the action of a second high velocity stream of gas &c. moving through the second jet and against the surface in a counter-current direction to the yarn. The process conditions may be uniform or, preferably randomly, varied, but in each case stable slubs of random size and distribution result and may be consolidated by a torque-jet as the second or a third jet which twists protruding loops or ends about the yarn and/or plies the slubbed yarn with a twisted or untwisted unslubbed yarn of similar or different composition. Additional twist may be imparted to the slubbed yarn. The natural fibres may be cotton, wool, linen, silk or mixtures thereof; the synthetic fibres may be of polyamides, polyesters, regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters, acrylic, vinyl and vinylidene polymers or copolymers thereof. Both streams have at least onehalf sonic velocity. As shown, zero-twist multifilament yarn 1 is withdrawn from package 2, through guides 3 and 5 and tension gate 4 by feed rolls 6, 7, about which the yarn makes several turns, then passes through a compressed air jet 8 and impinges, at an oblique angle of 30-60 degrees, on a foraminous screen 10 through which the air stream passes. The yarn is withdrawn through a slubbing jet 11 from which a second air stream is directed to impinge on the screen 10 adjacent the first stream so that turbulence created between the streams causes the yarn to twist, loop and entangle on itself. The jet 11 consolidates the slubbed yarn by intermingling of the folds, loops and filaments of the slubs and the base yarn bundle, and the final yarn passes from take-up roll 14 to the package 16. Suitable jets are described in Specification 871,112 and U.S.A. Specifications 2,985,995 and 2,997,837. Specifications 732,929, 892, 587, Belgian Specification 573, 230 and U.S.A Specifications 2,783,609, 2,874,444 and 2,931,090 also are referred to.
