Abstract

Reconstituted tobacco sheets are prepared by subjecting the tobacco to a hydrolizing treatment in an aqueous medium at a solids concentration of 10% to 40% with a hydrochloric acid concentration of 0.1 to 1.0% for 1/2 to 2 hours at a temperature of 93 DEG C. to 150 DEG C., neutralizing the aqueous tobacco-containing medium, e.g. with a dilute alkali such as sodium hydroxide, mechanically attriting the treated tobacco, forming a sheet from a slurry of the attrited tobacco, and drying the sheet. The tobacco sheet preferably contains 5-20% of a polysaccharide and from 2-20% of a humectant.
