Abstract

A process for treating tobacco leaf stems comprises treating the stems with an acid or complexing agent which will remove polyvolent cations, e.g. calcium and magnesium, and subsequently subjecting the stems to treatment in boiling water at atmospheric pressure. The acid or complexing agent is washed out of the stems with water before boiling. An alkaline agent is added to the boiled pulp to neutralize pectic acid. Suitable acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric, phosphoric, acetic and formic acids and suitable complexing agents are sodium and potassium hexameterphosphate. Quantitative examples are given.
