Abstract

967,100. Centrifugal fans; silencers for gaseous currents. DAIMLER-BENZ A.G. June 29, 1962 [July 1, 1961], No. 25104/62. Headings FIB and F1C. A fan comprises a casing made as a filter for absorbing acoustic vibrations, the filter comprising an absorption layer bounded on the outside by a gas-tight wall made of a flexible material and on the inside by a perforated wall made of a rigid material. In the fan shown, a sound-absorbent layer 10<SP>111</SP> of foamed or expanded synthetic plastics is blown or foamed into the space between a flexible outer wall 10<SP>1</SP> and an inner wall 10<SP>11</SP> of sheet metal stamped or punched with holes 14. The layer 10<SP>111</SP> may alternatively be composed of non-woven organic or inorganic fibres and may be reinforced in the region of the inlet 16 or the outlet 17 or both. The inner wall 10<SP>11</SP> may alternatively be made of expanded sheet metal, wire-mesh material, or perforated rigid synthetic material. The external shape of the casing may be other than rectangular; for example, the outer wall 10<SP>1</SP> may be of the same shape as the spiral inner wall 10<SP>11</SP>, the layer 10<SP>111</SP> then being of uniform thickness. The driving motor 11 is supported from the inner wall 10<SP>11</SP> by staggered streamlined members 11<SP>1</SP> of rubber or like material.
