Abstract

1373292 Silencers C S VASILJEVIC 19 June 1972 [24 June 1971] 28582/72 Heading F1B A muffler comprises an elongate casing 1, Fig. 1 closed at each end by a cover 2 having a central flow opening 3, a first longitudinally disposed damping means 4 around the inner perimeter of the casing and a second attenuating system in the form of baffles 6 spaced longitudinally of the casing to provide a flow-path between the flow openings, each two consecutive baffles defining a resonance chamber. The tubular casing 1 e.g. of round, oval or polygonal cross-section, contains the longitudinal attenuating system 4 which is secured by a cylindrical perforated sheet metal screen 5. System 4 attenuates by resonance. Baffles 6 are lined with mineral wool 9. In a modification the baffles are circular discs (11), Fig. 2 (not shown). In another embodiment, the baffles 6 are also lined and the spaces between baffles may be filled with a sound absorbing material. The longitudinal system resonators 17, Fig. 4 are of foamed material with an open box shape the open sides of which are covered by a masking foil. In a modification of Fig. 2 the longitudinal resonator is made up of resonator inserts 17.
