Abstract

1511625 Silencing fans C S VASILJEVIC 12 May 1976 [14 May 1975] 19572/76 Headings F1B and F1C An axial-flow fan comprises a tubular acoustical silencer 7, and a cowling 4 adjacent the silencer the cowling having a cylindrical portion 5 embracing the fan impeller 2 and of smaller internal diameter than the silencer and a relatively short transition portion 6 providing an abrupt increase in diameter of the cowling adjacent the silencer. The transition may be continuous as shown or stepped. There may be two contra-rotating impellers 2 and two silencers 7, each encircling one of the driving motors 1. The silencer comprises resonator chambers 12 formed by elements 9 which are preferably of foamed polystyrene, and a damping layer 10 of mineral wool covered with perforated sheet 11. An internal silencing core adjacent the motor 1 may be provided.
