Abstract

1517548 Intake silencers BRUNSWICK CORP 19 Sept 1975 [11 Oct 1974] 38630/75 Heading F1B An intake silencer suitable for a six-cylinder two-stroke in-line outboard motor comprises two mouldings 25 and 26 which together define chamber 24. Openings A, B, C, D, E, F correspond with carburetter intakes and bolts 38 secure the part 25 to the carburetters. A thick resilient cushion 39 may be interposed. Air enters chamber 24 through the openings 41 to 45 and 41' to 45'. Each opening consists of a tube of smooth, acoustically hard material the length and diameter of which is selected to tune for resonance with the effective volume of the chamber at a frequency a little below the cruising speed firing frequency of the engine. A cowl is fitted over the engine and air enters through openings in the cowl, or the tubes may project through the walls of the cowl. In an example, for an engine of 122 cu. ins displacement and cruising speed of 3000 r.p.m., chamber 24 had an effective volume of 246 cu. ins and the air inlet tubes were 0À875 in bore diameter and 3 ins long. In a modification, Fig. 5, for a smaller engine having a single carburetter fed through a single outlet opening G, the air inlet tubes 60, 61 are semi-circular in cross-section and extend along two vertical sides of the chamber. The tubes are open at their lower ends and deflectors 64 guide the incoming air towards opening G.
