Abstract

1,182,316. Intake silencers. GOTAVERKEN A.B. Dec.18, 1967 [May 30, 1967], No.57314/67. Heading F1B. A silencer located in the substantially 90 degrees bend of a conduit 8 between a turbocharger 6, 7 and the air receiver 10 of a two-stroke I. C. engine 1 comprises a plurality of parallel passages each of which at right angles to the direction of air flow has a depth between the ratios of ¥-1 and 1-1 of the wavelength of the basic compressor sound at the normal engine operating speed. The passages in the bend have their walls covered by damping material 13, e.g. mineral or glass-wool bonded by a plastics material, covered by a perforated sheet 16 and the area of the openings 17 in relation to the pitch of the openings and the thickness of the damping material is such that the resonance frequency of the silencer will substantially correspond to the basic compressor sound. A formula for determination of the silencer resonance frequency is given in the Specification. The silencer 11 acts as a diffuser to the air receiver 10 and its cross-section changes from circular at the connection to the conduit 8 to rectangular at the connection with an air cooler 9. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), a modified arrangement of damping material is provided.
