Abstract

<PICT:0966148/C6-C7/1> Apparatus for the annealing of continuous strands consists of a pair of parallel passageways through which the heating medium is passed, the medium flowing in opposite directions in the two passages, and the passageways having apertures in their walls whereby the strand passes through the apparatus in a direction transverse to the flow of the medium. In one embodiment the passageways are formed by the legs of a U-shaped duct. Differential annealing of the strand may by brought about by allowing cold air to enter the apparatus with it, whereby annealing of the side remote from that on which the heating medium impinges is prevented. As illustrated, fan 18 circulates air past heater 20, downwards through passage 12 and upwards through passage 13. Strand 24 passes through rolls 25 and apertures 26, 27, 28. Heater 20 is controlled by probe 21.
