Abstract

624,545. Annealing. STIVIN, J. June 20, 1947, No. 16371. Convention date, July 9, 1946. [Class 72] A method of recuperation of heat in the heat treatment of wire, in which the wire is heated by high frequency induction to a predetermined temperature and then relatively quickly cooled to a lower temperature by means of a suitable cooling medium, the cooling medium, heated during the cooling of the wire, being used for preheating further quantities of wire before the latter is supplied to the heating apparatus, wherein the heating lead is arranged between two portions of a continuous space filled by the cooling medium employed. As shown in Fig. 1 a wire 4 is passed through a molten lead bath 1, then heated by an induction lead 3 above the lead bath, and finally passed again into the lead bath before being cooled in air. Fig. 3 shows apparatus comprising an annular channel 23 in which a gaseous cooling and preheating medium is circulated. The wire 24 passes transversely through opposite sides of the channel and is heated by an induction lead 25 in the centre. Fan 26 circulates the medium which cools the heated wire and preheats the incoming wire. Heat losses may be compensated by auxiliary heater 27. Specifications 343,262 and 400,586 are referred to.
