Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a rail, the rupture strength of whose neck is high, by heating the top and side of the head of the rail and its neck above the A1 transformation point and thereafter rapidly and uniformly cooling the heated portions in a coolant. CONSTITUTION:A heater 6 is provided on the transfer line of a rail R so that the heater surrounds the top 2 and side 3 of the heat of the rail and its neck 1. After the entire head of the rail R is heated to a temperature above the A1 transformation point, almost equal quantities of a coolant are ejected from a cooler 7 onto the top 2, the side 3 and the neck 1. These portions are thus uniformly and rapidly cooled so that no excessive tensile stress remains in the neck 1 of the rail. This results in making the rupture strength of the neck 1 of the rail much higher than that of a conventional heat-treated rail.
