Abstract
PURPOSE:To uniformalize the shape of the quench hardened layer of the head parts of rails by preheating the connecting members connecting the end parts of the rails to themselves to a prescribed temp., then passing the connected rail row to a heating zone then to a water-cooling zone. CONSTITUTION:When the leading end of the connecting members 1' of a rail row connecting the end parts of rails 2 to themselves by means of the members 1' arrives ar the position of a detecting switch 8, the heating by a burner 9 is accomplished for the members 1' having arrived at the position of the burner 9 based on the on signal of the switch 8, whereby the members 1' are preheated to prescribed temp. Hence, even if the members 1' are charged into a hardening furnace 4, they will not lower the furnace temp. and will not absorb the heat of the rails 2; therefore the entire part of the rail head parts is uniformly heated. Thence, the rail row is passed through a water cooling device then through a tempering furnace 6, whereby the head parts of the rails 2 are heat treated, and the rail 2 having a uniform shape of the quench hardened layer over the entire part of its length in the head parts is produced.
