Abstract
<PICT:0975408/C6-C7/1> An apparatus for cooling or heating metal strip is similar to that claimed in Specification 938,235 comprising an enclosed housing (see Figs. 1 and 2, not shown), means for moving the strip through the housing, and atmosphere recirculating units 30, Fig. 3, disposed at least partially within the housing and adjacent the path of strip movement, each unit including orifice means for discharging the recirculating atmosphere at high velocity against the strip surface. The units 30 of the invention are modified in that the orifice means includes a plurality of orifices 49 arranged in two or more rows which are spaced apart in the direction of strip movement similar to the atmosphere inlet openings 50 on opposite sides of the orifice means. As shown, a water-cooled heat exchanger 58 comprising a plurality of U-shaped tubes is disposed in the path of the recirculating atmosphere. The orifice means may further include an elongated slot 48 extending perpendicular to the direction of strip movement and the rows of openings 49 on either side may be parallel and become progressively greater in length farther from the slot.
