Abstract

965,464. Swash plate pumps; I.C. engine drive gear. F. E. SWAIN. Oct. 4, 1962 [July 6, 1961], No. 24418/61. Headings F1A and FIB. [Also in Division F2] An I.C. engine as shown, Figs. 1 and 2, has four cylinders 2 in a cylindrical housing 1, with two double ended pistons 3 in each cylinder. Each piston is connected to one of a pair of swash plates 6, rotatably mounted on the inclined arms 5 of a central Z-shaped crankshaft 4, by means of a ball and cup joint, the centre of curvature of the co-operating part spherical surfaces being offset laterally by a distance "X" (Fig. 2) from the longitudinal centre line of the associated piston. The offset is adjustable by means of support stems 12 for the ball members 9 of the joints, which stems are screwed into the pistons. The offset accommodates differential expansion of the housing 1 and the swash plates 6. A swash plate pump, Fig. 6, has a single hemispherical swash plate 20 integral with a drive shaft 21, and ball members 25 having part-spherical surfaces greater than hemispheres and carried on pistons 26 engage hemispherical cups 24 let into the diametric face of the swash plate 20. The centre of curvature of each ball member 25 is laterally offset by a distance "X" from the longitudinal centre line of its piston 26. The cylinder block 23 is freely rotatable in the housing 28 which has an end plate 30, with a non-rotatable insert 31, provided with inlet and outlet ports 34. The shaft 21 may rotate about its own axis at a preset inclination to the longitudinal axis of the housing 28, or may describe a conical motion limited by the sides of the aperture 35 without rotating about its own axis, the cylinder block 23 remaining stationary in this case. It is stated that the invention may be applied to engines having curved pistons and cylinders.
