[Class 80 (iii)] i[Also in Group XXVIII] In a swash-plate mechanism such as employed in fluid pumps and motors a part-spherical slipper 10a, Fig. 2, is provided between the piston or plunger 11 and the surface of theplate 13. The slipper seats in a corresponding spherical bearing surface in the end of piston 11 having its centre at a point 17a which lies within the surface of the plate 13 so that frictional drag in a direction 14 tends to rotate the slipper in a direction 16a to assist in the formation of a wedge-shaped oil film converging in the direction of relative rotation of the plate and slipper. In Fig. 3, applied to a multi-cylinder pump, the axes of the plungers 22 are inclined to the swash-plate axis and the surface of the swash-plate is part of a sphere of large diameter. Each slipper 24 is retained on its plunger 22 by means of a rivet 30 passing through a bore 28 with clearance to allow the slipper to rock freely.
