Abstract

577,287. Reciprocating pumps. DRURY, G. W. June 4, 1943, No. 9023. [Classes 8 (i) and 102 (i)] In a radial cylinder pump the pistons 2 are reciprocated by a truncated conical cam 6 the rotation axis of which is inclined to its axis of construction, and the stroke of the pistons is controlled automatically in accordance with the delivery pressure by axial movement of the cam Fluid from the delivery line 19 is supplied to a cylinder 9 containing a piston 8 which moves the cam 6 against a spring 12, a relief valve being provided at 18. The cam 6 and drive shaft 7 are formed with semi circular or rectangular longitudinal flutings to contain torquetransmitting balls or rollers 14. The cam may be so arranged that increase in delivery pressure causes an increase or decrease of stroke or it may comprise a number of truncated conical members rotatable about a common axis, with their tapers converging or diverging, and acted upon by a number of pistons 8 and return springs 12.
