703,808. Spherical pumps and motors. GUNTHER, J. J., RONNBOM, M. V., and RONNBOM, O. M. C Dec. 24, 1951 [Jan. 13, 1951], No. 30135/51. Class 110 (2) A part-spherical member 1, secured to a driving shaft 7 has a number of radial pumping chambers containing pistons 2 ... 6. The pistons are carried in an oblique ring 11 which causes them to reciprocate in their cylinders. The piston strokes may be varied by rotation of a handle 13 to alter the angle a between the axes of the shaft 7 and OP, the axis of the ring 11 and a support member 12. Ball bearings may be used in place of the plain bearings 20, 21. The ring 11 contacts a reduced radius of the ball' 1 at 18, which supports the parts 11, 12 against centrifugal force. Spaces 22, 23 permit the movements of the parts 11, 12 through variation of the angle α, which may even be formed on the other side of the shaft axis, the pumping then being reversed. The coupling means between a piston and the ring 11 comprises a cylinder 8 which is placed transversely in a cylindrical part 9, and a ring 10. The parts 8, 9 may be replaced by a ball joint. The ring 10 has five slots for, the drivers 11a, extending from the ring 11, which press at 19 on the backs, of the pistons.. The pump is valveless. Where the apparatus is used as a motor, the parts 13, 12 may be omitted.
