Abstract
646,371. Reciprocating pumps for liquids. BEACHAM HYDRAULIC CO., Ltd., and BEACHAM, T. E. Sept. 17, 1946, Nos. 27-782/46 and 3832/47. [Class 102(i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a hydraulic pump comprising a swash-plate mounted on a conic crank so as to be freely rotatable thereon and adapted to reciprocate piston units having their axes parallel to the axis of rotation of the conic crank and biassed axially towards the face of the swash-plate, the friction preventing the swash-plate from rotating, the plane of the face of the swashplate passes through the point of intersection of the axis of the conic crank and the axis of rotation thereof, the pistons being free to turn in their cylinders. A conic crank 2 solid with a rotary drive shaft 1 supports, through a ball-bearing 33 a swashplate 3 the face of which is engaged by the spherical or coned ends of pistons 4a reciprocating in cylinder 8a. The cylinders comprise bores in a cylinder block 9 into the enlarged ends of which sleeves are screwed, the sleeves also serving to guide piston return springs 5. To the ends of the block 9 hoods 23, 24 are bolted to house the mechanism. Inlet valves 14a at the cylinder ends remote from the swash-plate are housed in counterbores in the block 9 and their seatings secured therein by screwed sleeves 42. The valve seatings are coaxial with eccentric enlargements of the cylinder ends, the enlargements co-operating with radially disposed outlet valves. As shown, the cylinders are of two diameters but all may have the same diameter; the end of the drive shaft is supported in a bearing 32 in the cylinder block but this may be omitted if an additional bearing is provided on the drive shaft 1. The construction results in a substantially pure rolling movement between the swash-plate 3 and the ends 6 of the pistons, there being also a slight oscillation at the region of contact therebetween, which is absorbed by the natural resiliency of the materials used. Weights 7a, 7b rigid with the drive shaft balance the centrifugal forces and the couple generated by the swash-plate and the reciprocating movement of the pistons (see Group XXVI).
