Abstract

<PICT:0965345/C1/1> Synthetic quartz containing 10-1000 p.p.m. of lithium is grown on seeds 46 from an aqueous solution in a pressure vessel 40, seeds 46 being separated from nutrient silica crystals 46a by a baffle 47. One seed is z-minor cut and the other basal cut. The aqueous solution contains 0.2-5 moles/1. of sodium hydroxide or a sodium salt and 0.01-1 moles/1. of lithium hydroxide or a lithium salt, and occupies 60-90% of the free space in the pressure vessel. The temperature of the solution in the neighbourhood of the seeds is 300-573 DEG C., and the difference in temperature between the seeds and the nutrient crystals is 15-70 DEG C. The solution is preferably above its critical pressure. The nutrient crystals may have a mesh size of 4-6 (U.S. standard). The growth rate may be 44 mils/ day. The sodium salt may be the carbonate or silicate. The lithium salt may be the nitrate, borate, carbonate, formate, oxalate, phosphate, silicate, sulphate, fluoride, iodide, chloride, or bromide.
