Abstract
<PICT:0838575/III/1> A crystal of corumdum is grown on a seed crystal 12 (Fig. 1) in a sealed autoclave 1 containing an aqueous medium 15 and aluminium-containing nutrient material 11, the medium being maintained at a temperature of at least 395 DEG C. in the region of the seed crystal 12 and above this temperature in the region of the nutrient material 11. The nutrient material may be aluminium oxide or aluminium hydroxide, and the aqueous medium may be a solution of sodium or potassium carbonate or hydroxide. The materials are contained in a sealed steel tube 6, which may be lined with silver or platinum, or in a sealed liner of silver inside tube 6 and spaced therefrom, the space being filled with water or aqueous medium. Several seeds may be used, and they are supported by a wire frame 13 having a baffle 14. The aqueous medium fills at least 65% of the free volume of the autoclave at room temperature, and the autoclave is heated to maintain its external mean temperature between 420 DEG C. and 460 DEG C. with the external temperature opposite the nutrient material 30 DEG C. to 35 DEG C. higher than the external temperature opposite the seed crystal. Chromium, cobalt, titanium or nickel may be incorporated in the growing crystal by adding compounds of these metals to the aqueous medium.
