Abstract

4- Hydroxy -6- methyl-pyrazolo- (3,4-d)-pyrimidine is prepared by refluxing 5-amino-4-cyanopyrazole with acetic anhydride to give 5-acetyl-4-cyanopyrazole which is reacted with hydrogen peroxide and potassium hydroxide and the product acidified to give the pyrimidine. 4- Mercapto -6- methyl-pyrazolo- (3,4-d)- pyrimidine is prepared by reacting the pyrimidine above with phosphorus pentasulphide. 4- Carboxymethyl thioether of 6-methyl-pyrazole-(3,4-d)-pyrimidin prepared by reacting the above mercapto-pyrimidine with bromo-acetic acid in alkaline solution. Symmetrical disulphide of 4-mercapto-6-methyl-pyrazole-(3,4-d)-pyrimidine prepared by reacting the above mercapto-pyrimidine with hydrogen peroxide in ethanol. The compounds are used as, or in the preparation of, antifogging agents used in silver halide emulsions (see Division G2).
