[Also in Division B4] A primer-less cartridge, particularly intended for use with cartridge-operated tools, comprises a case 21 containing liquid propellant P, ignitable by adiabatic compression, and a movable piston 22 crimped within the case in such a position as to subject the propellant to a pressure, normally within the range 50 to 750 p.s.i., predetermined by the ignition sensitivity required of the cartridge. Examples given of suitable liquid propellants are propyl nitrate, ethyl nitrate and nitromethane and the case or piston may be made of metal or plastics such as brass, aluminium, polyethylene or nylon. Two cartridge operated tools are described for use with the cartridge (see Division B4).
