Abstract

984,660. Cooling pistons. SULZER BROS. Ltd. Feb. 20, 1964 [March 6, 1963], No. 7195/64. Heading F2T. In an internal combustion engine in which cooling liquid, e.g. water, is supplied to and discharged from a piston 2 through telescopic tubes 9 and 20 and 10 and 21 respectively, the tubes 9 and 10 attached to the piston extend through a seal 11 into a chamber 12 disposed in but sealed off from the engine crankcase 6 and the fixed tubes 20 and 21 are secured to the chamber 12 and extend into the moving tubes 9 and 10 respectively. Water is supplied to the tube 20 through a pipe 13 and discharged from the tube 21 by a pipe 14. The upper ends of the tubes 20 and 21 are provided with guide bushes, preferably of plastics, which slidably fit in the tubes 9 and 10 and any water leaking past those bushes into the chamber 12 is removed through a discharge pipe 15. The chamber 12 is vented by a pipe 22. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 790,748.
