Abstract

In a piston 2 comprising a cooling chamber 3 partly filled with liquid during operation, a conical guide member 42 extending axially of the piston and enclosing a passage of contracting cross-sectional area open at both ends to the part of the chamber outside the passage is housed in the chamber. The piston is formed by parts 30, 31 secured together and to the piston rod 4 by bolts 32 and the cooling chamber 3 is closed by a cover 40 having a crenellated flange with recesses 41, the guide member being attached to the projections between the recesses and having radial ribs 45 on its exterior aligned with ribs 43 supporting the piston crown 38. Cooling water is supplied to and returned from the chamber 3 through coolant tubes 9 communicating with inlet and outlet ducts 39 and 37 respectively. In operation, the cooling water is circulated through the member 42, by movement of the piston, being drawn inwardly through the recesses 41 and flowing outwardly from the crown end of the member. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the inlet (57) and outlet (60) ducts to the cooling chamber (51) are on diametrically opposite sides of the guide member (55).
