Abstract

1,066,449. Cartridges. OLIN MATHIESON CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Nov. 6, 1963 [Nov. 28, 1962], No. 43844/63. Heading F3A. A cartridge containing liquid and gaseous charges is closed at one rupturable end and has an open mouth at the other end holding a piston which is struck to compress and explode the charges. The cartridge suitable for firing bolts etc. comprises a case 10, rim 18 and closed rupturable end 17 together with a piston closure 11 having a skirt 19 and a plastics layer 12 which form a movable but sealed closure at the other end. A propellent charge 14, being a mixture of ethyl and n-propyl nitrates occupies between 10 and 70% of the volume of the enclosure 15 within the cartridge, the remaining space being filled with air at atmospheric pressure. If smaller charges are required the piston 11 and layer 12 may be held further within the cartridge to give a reduced size enclosure 15. A suitable discharging tool has a bolt which strikes the layer 12 and forces the piston 11 into the cartridge to adiabatically compress and explode the charges. The cartridge is held in the breach of the tool with its end 17 against a plate having a central jet forming orifice along which the explosion gases pass into a barrel of the tool to propel a tool piston carrying the fixing bolt. A modified cartridge has its closed end 17 reduced in thickness around the centre to aid rupture. The piston and layer may be combined as a single piece of plastics material.
