Apparatus for measuring a quantity of a liquid by weight comprises a float 7 disposed in a chamber 5 containing the liquid, the float having a support 14 for a weight 8, whereby the float will sink in the liquid to an extent dependent on the value of the weight, and will displace a corresponding volume of liquid, an index pointer 9 being provided against which the level of the liquid in the chamber can be compared, and a valve 4 also being provided to enable liquid to be drawn from the chamber. The apparatus may be used to measure the fuel consumption of an I. C. engine, and in use liquid fuel is supplied to a chamber 1 which it fills to a level controlled by a float valve 2. The valve 4 is in the position shown in Fig. 1 and thus the same level of liquid is present in the chamber 5 and in a transparent manometer limb 6. A pipe 15 supplies fuel to the engine (not shown). The pointer 9 is set at the level of the liquid in the limb 6, and to conduct a test the valve 4 is turned to cut off the supply from the chamber 1 and connect the pipe 15 only with the chamber 5. Simultaneously with the operation of the valve 4 a stop-clock is started and subsequently the weight 8 is placed on the support 14 depressing the float 7 and causing the liquid to rise in the limb 6 above the pointer 9. When the liquid level again falls to the level of the pointer as the engine uses the fuel, the clock is stopped and the measured time is the time taken for the engine to use the weight of fuel equal to the value of the weight 8. A number of consecutive measurements can be made by measuring times for successive weight additions, and the valve 4 and stop-clock may be inter-coupled. An alternative mode of operation is described which avoids simultaneous operation of the valve 4 and stop-clock. A further embodiment of the invention is also described in which the weight on the float 7 displaces an equal weight of fuel to another chamber which feeds the engine, the fuel level in this chamber being known before the test, the time taken for the fuel to return to this level being measured.
