998, 763. Manometers. COMBUSTION INSTRUMENTS Ltd. Feb. 14, 1963 [Nov. 17, 1961], No. 41163/61. Heading G1L. A liquid column inclined-tube manometer comprises a resevoir 1 and a gauge tube 2 containing an indicating liquid, a scale 8 being provided alongside the tube 2 carrying markings e.g. a line 7, enabling the tube 2 to be set at the desired inclination by coincidence of the liquid level in the resevoir 1 and tube 2 with the line 7, before measurement commences, the scale 8 also being provided with other makings enabling displacement of the liquid column in the tube 2 to be observed after the tube has been set at the desired inclination. The manometer may be cast or machined from a solid block of synthetic resin and the tube 2 is provided with an extension 10 into the resevoir 1 to allow the manometer to be stood on its edge 11 for measuring higher pressures. The manometer is set to the desired inclination by use of a levelling foot 5, and pressure differences are measured by connecting the higher of the two pressures to a connector 4 and the lower to a connector 3, thus causing depression of the liquid in the tube 2 which is measured on the scaled. By use of more than one line 7 different pressure ranges may be measured. In a modification a valve is disposed in a by-pass between the connections 3, 4, which valve may be opened when it is desired to re-set the manometer, and the manometer may incorporate magneto so that it can be attached to suitable surfaces. Furthermore, more than one tube 2 may be provided, the other tube or tubes either being parallel to or at differing angles to the one shown and leading into it so that a greater range of pressures maybe covered without resetting the manometer. The scale 8 may be inscribed or embedded in the manometer and may be of diffuse reflecting material or a specular reflector.
