1401274 Volume determination J G GISBY 6 July 1972 [6 July 1971 14 Feb 1972] 31640/71 Headings G1W and G 1X The volume of a package &c. is measured by means of a device comprising a first scale having a family of hyperbolas thereon, and a second scale consisting of a family of curves (which term includes straight lines). One face of the package is abutted against the first scale 21, Fig. 1, and the position of point 29 noted with respect to the hyperbolas having constants 2, 4, 6 &c. A cursor 27 may then be placed in position shown adjacent an opposite face of the package. The intersection of the cursor 27 with the correct straight line 26 giving the package volume, the correct line 26 being numbered the same as the hyperbola on which is the point 29 (i.e. 4 as shown). By using a modified device, Fig. 2, the weight of a package is determined by a weighing machine 33 and indicated on a dial 34. A slider 48 moves over a potentiometer wire 47 so as to give an electrical output determined by the package weight. Similarly a pointer 46' on a cursor 43 is movable over a potentiometer wire 45 line 39 numbered the same as the line 36 on which is the point 29 to give an output determined by the package volume. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, an extension scale 73 is used when a package is too large for scale 70. The volume encompassed by length L is measured as before, the extra length I being measured on scale 73 or by tape 73'. This extra length l selects a vertical line on an extended scale of wall 71, and its bisection with a line 76, which is determined by point 79' as before, giving the total volume of the package on scale 78. Lines 76 and scale 78 may be drawn to a smaller scale (x 2 as shown). Alternatively, lines 76 may be replaced by a family of parabolas and the scale 78 altered accordingly.
