Abstract

961,714. Two-part couplings. BELLING & LEE Ltd. Dec. 15, 1961 [Jan. 6, 1961], No. 612/61. Heading H2E. A polarization indication device for a multicontact two-part connector link device includes a sleeve 50 and a pin 23 so mounted on the parts 34, 1, of the connector respectively as to allow their positions to be varied with respect thereto, and at least one spline 25 and a complementary notch 52 so associated with the sleeve and pin that for every position of the sleeve 50 with respect to part 34, pin 23 can only fully enter sleeve 50 to allow the two parts of the connector to mate, when in a position with respect to part 1 that allows the first spline 25 to engage within its complementary notch 52, and means to indicate the positions of the sleeve and pin. As shown, pin 23 carries the spline 25 and has a hexagonal flange 24 and fits within a hollow sleeve having a hexagonal flange 26 and a skirt 28 which has a spline 30 on its inside, Fig. 4. Pin 23 can be rotated after insertion so that spline 25 can take up six different positions with respect to spline 30. The assembled hexagonal flanges 24, 26 fit in a cavity 10 in part 1 and are located in position by the side walls 11, 12 of cavity 10 so that spline 30 can assume six different positions with respect to part 1. Thus splines 25, 30 can take up thirty-six different relative positions with respect to part 1. The sides of hexagonal flanges 24, 26 carry numerals from one to six which can be viewed through a window 13 in side wall 12. Sleeve 50 fits within a second sleeve 46 having a notch 48 in its side and a hexagon 47 on its lower end. Sleeve 50 has a hexagon 51 on its lower end which fits within a hexagon on the inside of hexagon 47 so that sleeve 50 can be inserted within sleeve 46 with its notch 52 in six different positions with respect to notch 48. Sleeve 46 fits within a groove 41 in part 34 which has side walls 42, 43, 60, 61 to locate hexagon 47 so that sleeve 46 can fit in groove 41 with its notch 48 in six different positions with respect to part 34. Thus, notches 48, 52 can take up thirty-six different relative positions with respect to part 34. Sleeves 46, 50 are held to parts 34, 31 by a screw 55 and nut 57. The top surfaces 49, 53 of sleeves 46, 50 are numbered from one to six and an arrow 59 on the top surface of part 34 indicates the combination of numbers which when they are the same as the combination showing through window 13 allow the two splines 30, 25 to enter the two notches 48, 52 to allow the two parts of the connector to be brought together. Part 34 fits over the contact sockets 32 in part 31 and when contact pins 2 are in place in sockets 32 part 34 is moved to tighten the sockets on the pins by means of the cam 38, screw 36 and part 5 as described in co-pending Specification 961,713.
