Abstract
961,660. Return - tube steam boilers. RICHARDSONS WESTGARTH & CO. Ltd. Feb. 6, 1961 [Feb. 4, 1960], No. 4018/60. Heading F4A. A fire-tube, shell-type boiler has a pair of internal combustion chambers 12, 14 joined respectively to furnace tubes 16, 18, which provide one combustion gas pass and to nests of tubes 20, 22 which provide a second pass for the said gas. To obviate the need for supporting the combustion chamber wrapper plates 24 by stays the cross-section of each combustion chamber taken in a plane parallel to the end plates is of substantially dumb-bell form, as shown in Fig. 2, the wrapper plates being of such a form that there is a smooth transition from the circular arcs defining the upper and lower parts of the chamber to the concave curves defining the central waisted portion. The chambers 12, 14 are so arranged within the shell 10 of the boiler that a space of U-shaped cross-section, is formed between them in which lies a nest of tubes 28 which provides a third combustion gas pass and which communicates with the tubes 20, 22 through a metal chamber 30.
